The ALABCA held their 25th Annual Coaches Convention at the Birmingham Marriott January 16 – 18, 2020. 380 High School & College Coaches attended the event. Some of the top coaches from around the country, as well as from Alabama, gave informative and engaging talks to those in attendance.

Brian Shoop, UAB Head Baseball Coach, kicks off the 25th Annual Coaches Convention. Fitting that Shoop was the first speaker at this January’s convention, as he was the only speaker at this year’s convention who spoke at the first convention back in 1995 at Hoover High School. He spoke on “infield play.”

Marc Rardin, Iowa Western C.C. Head Baseball Coach, 3-time NJCAA National Champion Coach and Junior College Coach of the decade in the 2010’s, spoke on “Total Team Practice Drills.” He also spoke on “Culture” during the “hot stove” session.

Legendary Coach Ron Polk, Former Mississippi State Head Baseball Coach and current UAB assistant coach, speaks to a full house on “outfield play.”

J.D. Pruitt, Spanish Fort High School Head Baseball Coach, speaks on “Building a Baseball Player from the ground up.”

Erik Bakich, University of Michigan Head Baseball Coach, speaks on “Maximizing Athleticism.”

Pat Murphy, University of Alabama Head Women’s Softball Coach, talks on “Getting on Top is One Thing, Staying there is another.” After having the most successful women’s softball program in the country the past 15 years he should know something about this topic.

Adam Moseley, Hoover High School Head Baseball Coach, talks on Pitching during the Thursday night “Hot Stove” session.

Mark Jackson, 429 Ministries Founder & Retired Opelika High School Head Baseball Coach & Methodist Minister, talks on “The Bottom Line – How We Walk.”

Chuck Box, Hatfield (MS) High School Head Baseball Coach, talks on “What I want to hear at a Coaches Clinic…. Ideas that Win!” Coach Box also spoke on base running during the “hot stove” session.

Turtle Thomas, Texas Rangers Catching Instructor, spoke on “Catching: Improving Pop Time & Accuracy,” as well as on “Hitting” during the “hot stove” session.

Travis Coleman, Atlanta Braves Scout, spoke on “How to prepare your Players for College/Professional Exposure.”

Legendary World Renowned Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. James Andrews spoke on “Arm Care.”

Gabe Gross, Auburn University Assistant Baseball Coach, gave an inspirational & challenging “Chapel talk” on Saturday morning before the general speaking sessions.

Dr. Brent Barranco, of GastroHealth, talks on Colon Cancer to the coaches on Saturday morning. The ALABCA felt is was a point of emphasis at this years convention since two head coaches in the state are battling 3rd and 4th stage colon cancer in their mid-40’s.

Tim Fanning, Glenwood High School Head Baseball Coach, gives his personal Colon Cancer testimonial after Dr. Barranco’s Colon Cancer talk. Coach Fanning is battling 4th stage colon cancer at the age of 47.

Matt Bragga, Rice Univeristy Head Baseball Coach, talks on “Producing at-bats that Lead to Runs.”
